Toys today seem to come with a host of electronic features. They can dance, sing, jump, giggle even wet their nappies (why would anyone want a toy like that?).

However, some child psychologists actually advise against giving very young children any electronic toy. They believe that babies and toddlers need to develop their hand and eye coordination, their imagination, and their motor skills—so giving something that moves and grooves at the touch of a button is counterproductive. The best educational toys are the Classic Toys.

Dolls

Dolls are certainly Classic Toys. Archaeological excavations have unearthed dolls that date back to thousands of years (talk about being sturdy!). These dolls may not have been able to sing or walk on their own, but they helped comfort a sick or frightened child, and were part of several imaginary adventures. These classic toys are also important in practicing social skills. As your child “interacts” with the toy, she plays out gestures or roles that she’s observed from adults around her. One of the best accessories for dolls are dollhouses, which make the imaginary games so much more real.

Wooden blocks

Wooden blocks are Classic Toys that your child will use for years. Younger toddlers would prefer to just bang them against each other—which builds their hand eye coordination and gross motor skills. As they gain greater control of their hand movements, these classic toys can be used to build towers, bridges and houses. The letters and numbers carved or painted on the side of wooden blocks also make them a great start to reading!

Balls

Does your child spend hours in front of the TV? Get him to play outside; where he can get the exercise he needs from running, jumping, and playing catch with friends. Child nutritionists are actually concerned that the sedentary lifestyle of kids today are leading to skyrocketing statistics of childhood obesity. So these classic toys can actually be exactly what the doctor recommends.

Rocking Horses

Look at any illustration of a children’s room, and you’re bound to find rocking horses included in the tableau. Rocking horses are some of the world’s most cherished classic toys, and are made of such fine craftsmanship and have such universal appeal that they are often passed down from one generation to the next. While they traditionally come in dappled gray, you can find them in many, many colors and sizes.

Kites

“Let’s go fly a kite, up where the air is light…” so goes the song about these classic toys from the classic musical Mary Poppins. While kites have no batteries or gizmos attached, they are a feat of skill—you need good aerodynamics. In fact, many see them as the precursor to planes, since the Wright Brothers studied kite movements while working on their historical invention.

The great thing about kites is that they can bring many happy hours of parent-child bonding. Make one together, and then take outside when the weather’s right. For some people, kite flying is a serious hobby, and they join worldwide kite flying competitions.

From the moment pregnancy tests turn positive, would-be parents, particularly moms-to-be start thinking of all the adorable outfits available that they will eventually let their babies wear. Although baby clothes may all be adorable, baby girl clothing is even more attractive for most, these commonly include layettes, onesies, dresses, shirts, sweaters, skirts, pants, jumpers and frog suits in feminine pastel colors with dainty embellishments and accents. Further, most baby girl clothing come in matching sets or can be easily mixed and match for added cost-efficiency and flexibility.

There are also wide choices of clothes for to choose from that come in all price ranges from cheap and affordable to expensive and luxurious. Baby girl clothing are mostly dominated by hues or accents in pink, purple, or yellow with bows, ribbons, embroidery and other embellishments that exude femininity. However, a lot of people buy baby clothes based on their appearance or the sheer cuteness or daintiness; they sometimes fail to realize the importance of baby’s safety and comfort in choosing baby girl clothing.

Functional Baby Girl Clothing

Parents may perhaps find it quite frustrating when they realize that the adorable outfit they purchased for their babies may be hard to put on or take off, especially for diaper changes. This is the reason why parents must first realize the function of baby clothes before buying them. Snaps, ribbons and bows, and even buttons may serve as adornments to make baby girl clothing even more adorable, yet parents must check where these are located for baby’s comfort and parents’ ease of putting the clothes on or taking them off. These decorative accents must not be bothersome to both baby and parents or caregivers alike.

Baby girl clothing must also give parents and caregivers easy access for diaper or clothing changes. Snap crotches are ideal for diaper changes, while clothes with stretchy necklines or those with snaps to widen the opening around baby’s head are ideal for easy and less bothersome clothing changes. Baby girl clothing must also be fit and appropriate for the season, if unsure, it is best to stick with seasonally appropriate clothing like cotton onesies and sleepers that can be layered to fit the temperature.

Parents may never tire of hearing about how babies quickly grow out of baby clothes, and are commonly advised to get baby girl clothing a size larger which they can use for a longer period. Accepting hand-me-downs from reliable sources may also be a great and cost-efficient way to enhance baby’s wardrobe. Baby girl clothes are definitely gorgeous, dainty and delicate to complement baby girls; the styles offered give parents more choices from traditional to trendy to satisfy both their and their baby’s clothing needs.

A new website lets teachers post their students’ grades online in real-time.

Sacramento, CA August 4, 2004 — As the back-to-school season nears, Engrade, an innovative provider of online tools for teachers, announced today the launch of its website http://www.engrade.com Engrade’s new website is a free service that allows teachers to post students’ grades online and allows parents and students to view those grades online in real-time by logging in to their Engrade account.

With this new service, Engrade seeks to give teachers a tool to keep parents and students continually informed of their grades, attendance, and upcoming assignments.

Thanks to educational sponsors, Engrade is a free service. And because Engrade’s technology is “web-based” it does not require any installations – all of Engrade’s service are available through their website.

In the past, teachers’ only method of grade reporting was to periodically print paper reports. Both teachers and students found this to be problematic because those paper reports became out of date as soon as a new assignment was graded – so students and their parents never knew exactly how they were performing in class and experienced long delays before seeing their corrected assignment scores.

Now, Engrade’s new online reporting tools will solve those problems by continually updating students online grade reports as soon as teachers enter new assignments into Engrade’s website – allowing students and parents to be constantly aware of their class grade and assignment scores.

“We feel that Engrade will really help students – and their parents – get a better idea of how they are performing in their classes and increase student-parent participation,” said Brian Holt, President and Founder of Engrade.

In addition to online grades, Engrade provides teachers with the option of posting attendance records and upcoming assignment due dates online.

Using Engrade’s online attendance reports, parents can see their students’ real-time attendance reports from work or from home and teachers can notify the parents of absent students instantly via e-mail.

With Engrade’s assignment calendar, teachers can post a list of upcoming assignments for students and parents to see when they log in, making the old excuse of “I forgot that was due today,” obsolete.

Engrade’s new website seeks to reshape the way grades, attendance, and assignments are reported, increasing students’ and parents’ participation and improving student performance.

How to get a prom date

Getting the right prom date is often the result of careful planning.

Girls typically work harder at getting a prom date than do boys. They seem to know intuitively how to get a prom date: planning months in advance, spending time with the right guy, and hanging out in the right group. These, the most successful methods, work best with advance planning.

Guys need to face their fears: Will you risk rejection by asking the person you are most attracted to, or play it safe by asking someone else? For you, how to get a prom date includes deciding what you want and what you are willing to risk. Then, ask-but don’t wait until prom week.

If you did wait until prom week, you may still find a prom date. If you have a girlfriend or boyfriend, you should already know how to get a prom date-but you should have asked before now. The next easiest approach is to ask a good friend. After that, asking someone in a lower grade is a safe bet for guys, because junior girls often make it a top priority to go to prom with a senior. Asking someone in another school works, too, since it feels risk-free all around.

If prom week is upon you and you are still wondering how to get a prom date, try asking your cousin, or your brother or sister. Admittedly this is a last choice, but it has a long tradition going back to the earliest of proms.

A large part of any girl’s prom is the prom hairstyle she chooses. The most popular prom hairstyles are subject to change each year. This year feminine, wavy styles are popular, but edgy styles will also fit the bill.

Today’s most popular prom hairstyles are luscious curls or waves. Multiple layers around the face, fresh curls, and shoulder length hair combine into an ideal of the feminine the mirrors the style of leading pop divas. Similar but less finished, soft twists combine those curls with styles that are half up / half down. Bangs are also in, especially large or sultry bangs swept to one side.

In spite of the emphasis on curls, straight hair still has its place among the popular prom hairstyles. Straight hairstyles that are textured or have a sleek mirror-shine are especially popular.

More daring styles include shoulder length bobs reminiscent of the late ’70s; the mullet is also in, combining cropped sections with longer tresses. Also popular is the extremely short cut worn by actress Alyssa Milano.

Always have a fallback style in case your hair refuses your chosen prom hairstyle. The popular French braid is an example of a style that can add class and control to any bad hair day.

The right accessory can make the difference between attractive and stunning. Bejeweled hair sticks or vintage hair combs are popular. Whatever you choose, be certain the hairstyle is consistent with the dress you have chosen, as well as with your jewelry.
