A majority of orchids are rewarding indoor plants. Once you have bought your first orchid or have received one as a gift, there are steps to take in order to maintain persistent flowering.

Orchids are much stronger and resilient than a majority of people believe, and are, commonly, tremendously adaptable. There is an ancient legend that orchids are intricate and complex, and not practical to grow, particularly lacking a greenhouse. There are over 20,000 species of orchids and over 100,000 hybrids that are grown today. There are particular orchid species that conform better to the lighting and conditions of the average home. This article will explain General Orchid Care tips so you too can grow and enjoy your own orchids at home.

The first thing to remember is that orchids are not like any other houseplants. Orchids do not get rooted into the ground, so always avoid potting orchids in soil. Orchids in the wild usually entwine their roots around trees and branches. Orchids have adapted to living in those conditions.

Watering

In the household, orchids are grown in pots that are filled with bark chips, stones, tree fern, or other loosely packed material that will keep the roots aerated and permit the flow of water to drain fast. Besides from potting an orchid in potting soil, the other major factor to NEVER forget when caring for an orchid is to NEVER allow the roots to sit in water. Always make certain that the pot is aerated and that all the water drains quickly.

Even though orchids cannot have their roots in water, they do need to get thoroughly watered generally once a week. One method to determine if you are watering an orchid thoroughly is to use the wood portion of a sharpened pencil and stick it into the pot and see if it gets wet from bark chips. If the pencil head is not wet when taken out of the pot then that is an excellent indication that the orchids need more water.

Temperature

A major factor to understand is that orchids in nature experience a dramatic difference between day and night temperatures. In the average home environment, the temperature only changes about 10 degrees at night. To initiate buds on an orchid, a good trick to employ is to lower the temperature in your home at night so the change in temperature between day and night increases to parallel closer to orchids’ natural environment.

Because there are many different orchid species, and because orchid species act differently to atmospheric temperatures, it is always best to find out specific information for the particular orchid species that you are growing.

Light

A majority of orchids necessitate ample light. A general amount to consider would generally be about 6 hours of light a day. Numerous orchids can endure more or even less than the suggested quantity of light, but supplying additional light enhances the changes of an orchid flowering. On the other hand, insufficient light can inhibit orchids from flowering, even though they will continue growing.

To determine if an orchid is acquiring sufficient amount of light, one method is to look at the leaves. Dark green leaves usually mean that an orchid is not getting adequate light. If an orchids leaves are a grassy, shiny green color, then your orchid is receiving enough light.

Windows that face to the south and west are ideal locations to locate your orchids for proper lighting. Direct sunlight should always be avoided. If an orchid receives too much light, then you will notice burn marks on the leaves. To adjust the lighting conditions, you can move the orchid around the room to manage conditions.

Artificial Light

If you wish to grow orchids where there are no windows, then you can consider artificial lighting. Generally, four 4-foot fluorescent tubes that are placed about 6 inches apart side by side should be sufficient. There are also other types of artificial lighting that are available. For example, you can use shop lights, grow lights that are made for orchid growing, and other special growing lights. A good rule of thumb is to locate the orchids under the lights and set a timer between 13 to 16 hours a day. Certain species of orchids such as vandas and cymbidiums will require more lighting to bloom.

Fertilizing

No plant can live with just air and water. The majority of orchid potting medium supply support only, and do not contain enough food nutrients. When the plants are planted in bark they require a high nitrogen food (30-10-10). Plants potted in other mediums require a different amount (18-18-18). Always use the specified amount of water located on the label of each fertilizer. If you begin noticing that the orchid leaves are shriveling up, then that is a sign that the plant is receiving too much fertilizer. A safety precaution is to flush the pots with plain water to prevent salt accumulation.

Most orchids only require fertilizer every couple of weeks. Accurate lighting is more important for flowering than a scrupulous fertilizer treatment.

Humidity

If you have successfully grown other types of houseplants, then the humidity in your home should be sufficient. However, if humidity was an issue in growing other houseplants, then the amount of humidity will surely be a concern with orchids. Not to worry, there is a simple trick to solve the humidity problem. Find a tray large enough to hold your pots. Then fill the tray with gravel and put water in the tray. Then place the pots in the tray and make sure that the orchid’s roots are not sitting in water. The evaporating water will provide the necessary ingredients that the orchids will need to thrive.

A relatively simple addition to your landscape plan of a pondless water feature can really make a considerable difference in your satisfaction of your yard or garden. You can relax and enjoy a tranquil water feature with not nearly the maintenance requirements of a pond. When you are thinking of installing a water feature to the garden area, pondless certainly can be an excellent choice. The benefits may outweigh the benefits of an actual pond.

Most pondless water features certainly are more child-friendly than some other water features. Considering the fact that there is not a pool of water will pose a much smaller liability or risk than that of a pond. Sure, other dangers are still present, such as slippery rocks around the area so caution is needed even without a pond.

Another nice thing about having the feature is the fact that they will not get stagnant. Since the water is constantly circulating, pesky mosquitoes will not have the opportunity to lay their larvae, so they are less likely to be attracted to this sort of water feature. Water feature maintenance without a pond is relatively simple. You will not have the need to maintain any difficult pond filter pumps or constantly be bothered with pond algae control.

Bubblers, fountains or waterfalls are usually much clearer, cleaner, and certainly smell much better than fish ponds. These kinds of water features need less care than typical fish ponds, since you will not be attempting to keep anything alive. You can go away on a holiday without an added worry.

You could plan and build a lovely water feature in your garden or yard that will need very low maintenance, but will deliver much satisfaction. You can enjoy the serene beauty of a pondless water feature just a few steps from your door.

Old wood windows, single pane glass windows or poorly hung windows and doors can be a major cause of energy loss. Everyone has experienced at one time or another, the cold blasts of winter seeping in around icy windows that are not insulated and sometimes won’t lock or even shut completely. Wood windows can be a maintenance nightmare as well. Replacing these energy hogs with vinyl, double-pane, low E windows can make a world of difference in not only energy savings but in noise reduction and lowered maintenance costs.

While some replacement window firms tend to come in with astronomical prices for replacing all the windows in your house, a quality home improvement contractor should be able to install an average sized replacement double hung window for about $400-$450 per window including the cost of the window. And while you are bound to get the best price if you have the entire house done at once, using a good home improvement contractor will allow you to do a portion of your windows at a time if doing the whole house would just stretch your budget too far.

If you have gaps around your doors, try contacting a contractor skilled in installing doors and see if it can be adjusted to hang properly to minimize outside air intrusion. If this isn’t possible, installing a storm door may be just what you need to add that extra insulation. Consider purchasing storm doors with moveable panels and screens for those warm days in spring and fall when you want to open up the house and take advantage of Mother Nature’s breezes. The added cost for the moveable panels will more than pay for themselves on the days when you can turn off the heat or air conditioning and open up the house.

Since most new construction doors do not have low E coatings on the glass, look into either having a coating installed or purchase one yourself at a home improvement store and coat the glass as a weekend project. A low E coating reduces the amount of heat that can penetrate your window glass and can make a big difference in you summer time utility bills as well as preventing areas with southern exposure from overheating in the bright sinter sun.

All of these tips will make huge differences in you energy bills. Since the cash that you put into improving your house can generally be recovered when you go to sell your house and money spent on utility bills cannot, it makes great sense to spend your cash sprucing up your house instead of sending your money to the utility company. Increase value of your home and lowered monthly utility costs make these types of improvements a huge success.

It’s quite a famous fact that exchanging of romantic and warm Valentine’s Day special gifts and greetings form the major part of this second most popular holiday of the year. And, in today’s world of towering commercialism, the tradition of gift-giving on Valentine’s Day is exploring newer shores. Turn your eyes around when the month of February dawns over the calendar, and you can’t help spot the renewed flood of sweet Valentine’s Day gifts in every store every year—those heart-shaped candy boxes decked up in red silk ribbons, those cute little cupids, those cuddly soft-toys or may be those sweet-smelling Valentine blooms—all these make D-day look all the more beautiful! Every year the stores come up with newer Valentine’s Day gift ideas to lure the starry-eyed gift hunters on the prowl during this time.

Research shows that the top recipients of Valentine’s Day gifts and greetings are couples (both steady and wanna-be), children, grandchildren and parents. But you can also send your wishes or gift a token of love to your ex-love, your friends, your latest crush, your neighbors or may be to someone who’s more than friends. Now, flowers and candies are so far the best and the most universal of all Valentine’s Day gifts. You can also wish your dear teachers a very ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ accompanied by a warm ‘thank you’ note. It’s sure to touch them deep and set their hearts aglow on this special occasion of love. Then again, you can pick some mushy love songs for the love of your life or you can make your significant other feel utterly significant by surprising her with a romantic holiday trip to some oh-so-nice nook of the earth. These are ideas which are sure to do the magic on the recipient. And rest assured your Valentine’s Day is going to be a memorable one. Kisses count as great Valentine’s Day gifts too. You can shower your kisses on Valentine’s Day because it has historically become a coveted gift for this very special holiday.

Now if you aren’t having a partner right now, don’t croak and frown. You can get someone into the spirit of love with a candid ‘Be My Valentine’ note, can’t you? Or may be you can impress your flame with some love funologies. Wouldn’t that be some love-ly Valentine’s Day gift ideas? And if you’re not among the luckier ones and have a distance to conquer to get in touch with your loved ones, just tell them how much you’re missing them on Valentine’s Day. You can send some virtual gifts his/ her way or you can ship a gift of your choice over the seas to be delivered sharp on February 14. But remember, nothing surpasses a hug when it comes to Valentine’s Day gifts. This isn’t something money can buy, nor does it run the risks of over-usage or the disgrace of becoming cliché. Maybe that’s what makes them more precious. Hugs can convey things which perhaps no other material Valentine’s Day gift can. So hold your loved ones close to you and give them a sweet squeeze on this sweet occasion of Valentine’s Day. Speak your heart out as best as you can, say ‘I Love You’ as many times you want, hug your dear ones as much as you can and make them feel warm all over as soon as you can with wonderful gifts and gift ideas!

Here’s wishing you a very Happy Valentine’s Day too!

I don’t get it. What happened to those hopes and dreams? When they used to wax poetic about their kid becoming a pioneer in whatever, in writing a prize-winning article, or composing soul-stirring music. A demanding, full-time, mentally draining job can derail those possibilities. Obviously, the bills have to be paid in the meantime. Even successful entrepreneurs have their hungry years, and practicality has to be considered. I’m not claiming jobs are useless and that there should be rampant unemployment. Every decision carries risk.

What I’m talking about is the huge sigh of relief that is emitted at the news that you took a job. Never mind that you’re developing a business (or two, or three) that interests you tremendously, or buying real estate creatively either for nice profits or actually living in the house. I don’t understand the relief. As long as you’re not expecting the folks to support you financially, why the big sigh of relief? Why is it inherently good to have a job? Not only is it not the path to financial freedom most of the time, it can also create a financial drain! Do people ever take out their calculators and actually measure what they’re putting in their pockets, after commuting, grooming, coffee, eating out, supplies, medical bills for injuries not covered by worker’s comp, and other expenses, for all their trouble? I’ve never heard a parent express wishes that their child will grow up to earn $.60/day being a cog in the machine. They want their children to have authority, respect, freedom. To BE the machine. Have choices.

A sad reality is, that in the years when I was a young kid, newly minted adults COULD buy real estate just by having a job; not necessarily a “great” one either. Houses were available in various price ranges all over the San Francisco Bay Area; when you upgraded your salary, you could get a bigger house. Now even the most lucrative (and I balk at that word being used to describe a job) job might barely get you into a cramped condo at a price that doesn’t leave you much left over….as for moving up to a better house, well, that’s a whole different predicament too. When typical starter homes are three quarters of a million dollars and need work, there are very few jobs available to very few people who can swing it the conventional way. I know there are exceptions, and even some parents out there who are very proud of their business-owning, creative real estate-buying, self-employed kids.

If that’s you, bless you. Your children are very lucky!

I’m Shannon Gunderson and I’m a
In over two years of being “unemployed”, my partner Jonathan van Clute and I have invested in residential real estate in 8 states and have bought more houses than we ever dreamed of.

Have you ever been “invited” out by your friends for a drink and at the next moment you know, he asked you to follow him up to a building? He starts telling you stories about his friends who are making a five figure income per month and that interest you!

He asked you the golden question, “Do you want to earn that kind of five figure income that my friend is earning?” Well, why not? Your answer probably was yes. The next thing you know he took out a stack of paper and start explaining the earning potential with his network company. He went on to explain to you about their products in detail. You are overwhelmed with information and all you want was to get into the business quick.

In no time, you join the company and were all ready to make some big money. But three months later, you find yourself going no where, you seem to be at the same spot where you started. Instead of making five figure incomes which your friend claims that you can, you are losing money on advertising and promotion. You are really lost and were in the verge of giving up.

In the end you gave up, you are very disappointed with the company and your friend. You felt being cheated and conned. You begin to think that network marketing company are scammers and you go around telling people to avoid and not to buy from such and such company.

So what actually happened? Is network marketing really a scam?

I did a research and found out that most people who condemn network marketing companies have never been involved with network marketing before. So why are they so negative about it? Did their friends tell them that network marketing was a scam? I believe so.

In the recent years, network marketing companies have grown popular and there was a significant increase in such companies. It was a trend. People are joining these companies because of the earning potential. Most companies realize the growing popularity and were going all out to attract new members.

I have understood why most network marketing companies fail because of two simple reasons. Sad to say, most companies have designed their compensation only to benefit those who are at the top of the organization and not for the masses. Members who join later will eventually leave and spread negative comments about network marketing simply because they cannot succeed.

The second reason which I noticed was companies were not providing sufficient support to their new members. The new members have to struggle and work their way through trial and error. They are new to network marketing and most of them don’t know how progress or even get started. Adequate training and support is needed to help them members grow and I personally feel that it is a must in any network marketing companies. A lack of support will result in a high percentage of members dropping out. Similarly, those that dropped out tend to spread negative comments and thus gave the networking companies a bad name.

These are the two reasons which I feel was why people have a bad impression about network marketing companies. A poorly designed compensation plan which only benefits the people at the top and the lack of support to new members, both is probably the cause of the bad impression.

Then again, there are legitimate and honest network marketing companies out there. Statistics shows that 3% of companies in the network marketing industry succeed and the 97% that failed was probably because of either one of the reason I discussed earlier. If you are skeptical about network marketing, I hope this article clarify some of your doubts and improve you understanding about why people have a bad impression about network marketing.

Many homes have striking architectural details from elaborate trim to iron work—and who can forget the glossy white columns popping up in many of today’s new homes. Many times, homeowners leave the columns because they are unsure as to what to do with them. Here are four easy ways to add pizzazz to your architectural columns.

1. Most often columns are painted bright glossy white. By simply choosing a different color, your columns will not stand out as much. Changing the sheen level of the column will make a visual difference as well. A flat isn’t recommended because fingerprints will easily be seen, however an eggshell or satin is a lower sheen level than gloss. Make sure that the capital of the column, the top part, as well as the base of the column blend with existing trim and molding.

2. Applying texture materials such as stucco or plaster will add depth to your column. A professional faux finisher will have a variety of textures that can be applied to both round and square columns. Many times a different finish can also be applied to the base and capital of the column to accent the texture or color. Professional artists have a variety of textures available that mimic natural stone. Beware of using joint compound or other “soft plasters” intended for drywall use. These plasters are soft, and may nick and chip over time.

3. Adding a marble look to columns is another option. There are two different types of marbleizing techniques. A fantasy marble looks painted on, and does not mimic a specific marble found in nature. Yet, many times a fantasy marble may look extremely realistic. If you are going for an authentic look, make sure to relay this to the faux finish studios you are interviewing. Be specific with what look you are going for, such as a carrera marble, or yellow sienna.

4. A colorwash can add depth and be visually interesting on a column. A light glaze or stain is rubbed over the column to give a variation of color. The technique can add an aged and historic look to both interior and exterior columns.

Remember, these changes can be applied to both interior and exterior columns. No longer will your glossy white columns be an eyesore. From changing the sheen of paint, to the color, or adding a faux finish technique to your columns, the change will be welcomed in any room.

If you follow some simple rules, getting baby to sleep through the night can be achieved painlessly and quicker than if you just put her to bed and hope for the best. New born babies sleep a lot and feed a lot! Any mother can tell you that! If you have a new born baby he or she will sleep, eat, have a quiet period while awake, occasionally cry and frequently poop.

First of all, let’s assume you have a daughter or a son. I getting fed up with writing ‘he or she’ and in any case, most babies are daughters or sons. There should be a word to apply to either sex – ‘it’ sounds too inhuman so sometimes I will refer to ‘she’ and at others to ‘he’. OK?

As a parent, you can help to encourage your child to enter into a consistent sleep pattern if you follow certain steps to encourage her to sleep alone. The first is to observe when and for how long she sleeps, feeds and rests. You might think you know this, but make out a chart and write it all down. This lets you do two things: you will be able to detect a pattern of how long she spends on each of the above activities, and at what times she does it. You will also be able to detect changes to the pattern as you train her to change her sleeping habits.

You won’t be able to change anything during this period: as any mother knows, when they are very young, babies rule! That’s what you call baby power and I have experienced it many times – and I’m just a dad, nothing as exalted as a mom! So this comes from experience, although I must admit that my wife is mostly responsible for this advice: her and her mother – and mine!

You should start to encourage your baby to sleep alone, but with you close by. The warmth of your body is comforting to your baby, and if you give her a cuddle first she will sleep easier if you put her into her bed.

Initially, your baby will not take too well to sleeping alone. Babies like their mothers to be close by, but with a bit of training and practice will learn to sleep by themselves. To achieve this have him in a darkened room during the evening and do not stimulate him in any way. No tickles or visits from relatives at this time. When the baby wakes and cries for feeding or nappy changing do it quietly and without fuss. The objective is to get him into the habit of being at rest in the evening.

Don’t wake him mid-evening for a bath. Bathing should be carried out in early evening before he is put to into his bed. No play at night! This will simply stimulate him and keep him awake. Getting baby to sleep through the night requires him to be settled and peaceful, not excited and stimulated.

Babies wake at night mainly to be fed. Sometimes they are unwell or too hot but it is usually to be fed. A baby’s stomach is the size of your fist and if you are breastfeeding, which is best for your baby, your milk will absorbed much quicker than formula milk. About 90 minutes is normal for digestion, and then your baby may need fed again! If you feed her during the day on demand, and try feeding before settling her down for the night, the feed will last as long as possible.

Many mothers have the maternal instinct to have their baby sleep with them in their own bed. This is natural instinct, originating from times when babies were fair game for nocturnal predators, but these are uncommon in normal urban environments. In some areas of the world it is still valid, but modern mothers should restrict this to having the child sleep in the same room at first.

This is fine: it allows you to tend to your baby during the night without too much disruption and your baby will find a sleep pattern much quicker knowing his mother is close by.

I do not recommend parents sleeping with their babies. It may work for some, but there have been tragic cases. Young babies are too weak to struggle if a parent rolls over onto them, and there have been cases of suffocation occurring in this way.

There is also the question of whether a baby should sleep on his stomach or his back. The normal advice given is that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is more prevalent with children put to bed on their stomach than on their back. I am making no inference here, but these are the facts. I personally would choose to place my child on his back at bedtime. After a few months he will be strong enough to roll about and choose his own most comfortable sleeping position.

A bassinet, pram or Moses basket by your bed is a suitable bed for your baby in the early days. You will be less disturbed while feeding, and your child will feel more secure. Children know when their mothers are close by. They can sense you and smell you. If you are breast feeding you will be able to feed your child without leaving your bed: this will help to prevent you from being grumpy during the day. Good for your baby and good for your partner!

Once your baby is around three months old she can be put in a crib to sleep in her own room. It should be achieved gradually, with the light on and with a feed and a cuddle first and you will have to return to the room several times a night for the first few weeks. Some children manage this younger and some take a bit longer, but it will be achieved quicker if you take the above advice. There is no real ‘right way’ of getting your baby to sleep, but this advice is based on what is known to succeed.

Eventually your child will get used to it and will settle down, and though a night light normally keeps them more at ease, you have achieved your objective of getting baby to sleep through the night.

I borrowed the title of this article from my friend and MLM Leader Terri Tomlison from Orlando, Florida. How true this quote really is!

Let’s look at how your business opportunity and products can solve the challenges that most Baby Boomer have in their life. Most are “Achy and Braky they feel bad, they have no energy, and they desire to feel the way they did in their prime. Do you have products that can benefit the baby boomer market? Hundreds of network marketing companies do.

Some of the best distributors you will ever sponsor will be customers first! Please understand this. When people have a life altering benefit from your products, they will be the most loyal distributors within your organization.
When another company offers an additional 5% on level 4 it won’t faze them because they have an emotional connection to the product. Dynamite won’t get them out of your organization.

One of the best ways to tap into the Baby Boomer market is to share your product first. You can create targeted leads for these excellent prospects with bulletin board flyers, newspaper inserts, cable TV classifieds, Welcome Wagon, drop cards and many other ways that we teach in our 21 Ways to Create Local MLM Leads course found at http://www.LocalMLMLeads.com .

How do you share your opportunity with baby boomers? Honestly and from the heart. Forget the hype; it won’t work with this group. You must open up to them and be who you are. Respect them, listen, ask the right questions, discover their needs and concerns and then share with them how your opportunity can address THEIR needs and concerns.

Remember, people do things for THEIR REASONS, not yours. One of the biggest mistakes that distributors make is talking about earning six figure monthly incomes to prospects that cannot relate with that type of income. Most baby boomers prospects you talk with are not real concerned about getting rich, if they were, they would already be totally financially independent. (Think about that one).

An extra $500.00 – $2,000 a month to supplement their retirement is the answer for 80% of prospects in this market. Not to say that some won’t be looking for Big Money, a few will be. That is why it is so important that you listen for the wants and desires of your prospect.

The last tip I want to share with you is to introduce them to someone within your company who has already achieved what they wish to accomplish. I am not necessarily talking about introducing them to your upline. If their goal is an extra thousand dollars a month to supplement their retirement, then introduce them to someone in your company who is about their age and who is earning $1,000 a month.

You want to create relationships with as many people within your company as possible. Collect their business cards and learn the success stories of as many sideline and upline associates as possible. You want to create a data base of stories and people that you introduce your new prospects and distributors to. People need to feel that people “like them” have accomplished that which they hope to accomplish with your opportunity.

Developing this database is one of the reasons that company conventions and events are so beneficial.

In conclusion, if you offer a nutritional product line, help the baby boomers get over their aches and pains and feel better. Then introduce them to your opportunity and share with them a great way to help people, supplement their current income and store up some nuts for next winter.
